Reading Three Runes as One Sentence

The line, not the three parts

The commonest mistake is reading each stone separately and then adding them up. Read left to right as one movement instead: this came from that, which is why it stands here, which is why it is heading there. If the three do not make a sentence, the question was probably three questions.

The past rune is not history

It shows the part of the past still acting on the situation — the thing that has not finished. A rune of endings here often means something genuinely closed and no longer worth weighing, which is useful precisely because it takes a possibility off the table.

The present rune carries the weight

It is the only one describing something you can act on today, so give it more room than the others. When the middle rune contradicts the outer two, trust the middle one: it is reporting the situation, while the others are describing a current.

The future rune is a direction

It says where things are tending if nothing changes, which is exactly the condition you can break. Read it against the present rune: a difficult third stone following a clear second one usually names the cost of doing nothing, not a fixed ending.

A reversed rune — merkstave — usually means the same force blocked, delayed or turned inward, not its opposite. In a three rune line the position tells you what that block is doing: reversed in the past, something that never finished; in the present, something being held back now; in the future, a direction that arrives slowly or in a different shape.
